Based loosely on a novel, this historical saga chronicles one Southern politician's rise to power through the eyes of an upper-class journalist who goes to work for him. Corruption and self-interest abound and entangle the characters as they struggle with the dirt that surrounds them. The MPAA has rated this film PG-13 for violence, sexual content and partial nudity. The film is set in post-Depression-era Louisiana and the language contains racial and class slurs that were in use at the time. A few uses of mild profanity are also included. The film contains some violence, most notably one bloody scene in which two men are publicly shot and killed at close range by handguns. Another shows the bloody aftermath of a man's suicide and his body under a sheet as he is taken from the scene. There are some scenes of sensuality, including several scantily clad burlesque dancers, and multiple direct and indirect references to infidelity. In one scene a woman fully undresses and lies on a bed with her breasts and genitalia covered while a man watches her. Adults use tobacco products and drink alcohol in social settings.
