MovieDescription: AMAZING GRACE Cast: Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Gambon, Romola Garai. Directed by: Michael Apted. In this drama, a British Parliament member named William Wilberforce led a campaign in 18th-century England to end slavery and the slave trade in the British empire. His friend and mentor, John Newton, a former slave trader, penned the well-known hymn for which this film is named, after receiving his own revelation and turning away from the slave trade. The MPAA has rated this film PG for thematic material involving slavery and some mild language. Throughout the film, dialogue revolves around the deplorable practices within the slave trade. An educated and articulate former slave joins the movement and shows scars from his beatings and injuries to members of Parliament and others. During his twenty-year fight, Wilberforce battles debilitating physical illness that grows more and more acute with the years.
