MovieRating: R

MovieType: Video Store

MovieDescription: 8 MILE Cast: Eminem, Kim Basinger, Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy. Directed by Curtis Hanson. Eminem stars in this film, which is loosely based on his own life story as Jimmy Smith, Jr., an aspiring rapper in Detroit who uses lyrics to deal with his anger and frustration. "8 mile" refers to the physical boundary that holds him in Detroit, in a life that holds no future. The MPAA has rated this movie “R” for nudity, sexuality and language. Very strong language including sexual slang is pervasive throughout the movie. The characters use rap lyrics to express anger and hostility. Viewers see it evolve as a kind of "sparring substitute" that allows them to vent frustrations against rivals through non-violent means. The main characters smoke marijuana and drink alcohol. They also engage in shooting police cars with paintball guns and burning down an abandoned crack house. Sexuality includes a young man opening a door of his home to see his mother engaging in sex with his former classmate. She is naked from behind. The main character has sex with his girlfriend in an abandoned area of the factory where he works. Later he walks in on his girlfriend exchanging sex for an opportunity to further her career. Neither of these two scenes has nudity. During a rap performance, the main character bares his backside to the audience. The main character's mother shares with him the intimate details of her sex life, despite the protestations of her son. Violence includes several scenes with fistfights. Two scenes involve handguns. A man shoots himself accidentally after brandishing a gun. A gun appears suddenly in the midst of a brawl and is held to a young man's head but no one is shot. At least two scenes of domestic violence occur, during which a small child watches as her mother and brother are beaten.
