MovieDescription: ORPHAN Cast: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder, Jimmy Bennett. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. In this thriller, the loss of their unborn child and the subsequent toll on their marriage and their two children prompts a successful couple to adopt an older child. Nine-year-old Esther is a loner at the orphanage, yet her articulate, gracious manner enables her to make a special connection with her new parents. But when Esther is welcomed into their home, her habits of secrecy and an alarming string of events threaten to destroy the family. The MPAA has rated this film R for violent content, sexuality and language. There are several instances of strong language uttered by adults and children. Adults use alcohol to deal with stress and heartbreak. Husband and wife, John and Kate, struggle under the weight of the loss of their third child. Their young daughter who is legally deaf immediately sees Esther as a long-awaited sister, but her brother, Daniel, is less accepting. Esther sets about driving a wedge between her adoptive parents, exploiting their respective weaknesses, and raising tension for the entire household. She spies on her parents, twice when they are intimately engaged and she sees them having sex. These scenes contain no nudity. When a nun from the orphanage arrives to tell the family there could be trouble in Esthers past, Esther arranges the murder of the Sister. Later, Esther manipulates Kate to anger, then uses a vise in her fathers woodworking shop to break her own arm, blaming Kate. When Daniel threatens to expose Esther she locks him in his treehouse and sets it on fire. In his attempt to escape he falls to the ground and sustains serious injuries and is hospitalized, where Esther attempts to smother him with a pillow. Strong themes include mental illness, loss of an unborn child, alcoholism, infidelity and forgiveness.
